Sri Lanka prove too good for Bangladesh

Sri Lanka thrashed Bangladesh by 131 runs in their first Asia Cup match at Lahore. In reply to Sri Lanka’s massive score of 357 for 9, Bangladesh could manage only 226 for 7. Kumar Sangakkara was the lone centurion in the match scoring a fine 101.

The opening pair of Sanath Jayasuriya and Sangakkara made Bangladesh skipper Mohammad Ashraful pay dearly for his decision to field first by putting on 116 in quick time. Once Jayasuriya, the dominant partner of the two, left after scoring 72 it was Sangakkara who changed gear and produced some excellent strokes to reach his 8th hundred in ODIs. Although skipper Mahela Jayewardene did not last long, Chamara Kapugedera gave the Bangladesh bowlers no respite scoring a fine 74. Abdur Razzak, who bowled well in the previous match against UAE, was again the most impressive Bangladeshi bowler taking 3 for 55.

Bangladesh never made any real attempt to chase the huge target and the match turned into a boring affair. Mushfiqur Rahim, Raqibul Hasan, Aloke Kapali and Masharafe Mortaza managed to score a few runs each that were of no real purpose. Their ordeal ended when the last ball of the final over was bowled with the score reading 226 for 7.

Brief scores: Sri Lanka 357 for 9 (Sangakkara 101, Kapugedera 74, Jayasuriya 72; Razzak 3/55); Bangladesh 226 for 7 (Mushfiqur 44). Sri Lanka won by 131 runs.
